They were in search of India, but discovered a new continent, which eventually lead to the birth of the American nation. On that voyage Columbus was in command of three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina. The flagship Santa Maria grounded on a reef on Christmas Eve and sank. Her remnants were used to build a fort on shore, called La Navidad, which became home to 40 marines, the first American colonists. They awaited Columbus’ return from Spain…
